Discover my 7 game-changing hair hacks to add volume to thin hair!

1. Use volumizing shampoo and conditioner

Opt for lightweight, volumizing products with words like “lift”, “lightweight”, “body”, “full” on the label.

Washing the hair

When shampooing, part your hair and work the product into every area of the scalp to get rid of all the residue that weighs down the hair.

For conditioner, do the opposite–avoid the scalp and only work the product from the mid shaft to the ends.

2. Root lifting spray or mousse

Volumizing products don’t just add lift, they also help your style last longer, especially when paired with the right styling technique.

Ideally, you should use 2 products, one for your roots and the other for mid lengths and ends. Apply both products while your hair is still very damp and easier to manipulate.

For root lifting sprays, focus on areas where you want volume: above the ears, the crown and the front of your head.

Work section by section, parting the hair and spraying directly at the roots. Then massage it into the scalp with your fingers.

For mid lengths and ends, distribute the product evenly. Then use a brush to work the product through.

3: Blow dry for volume

Start by rough-drying your hair to remove about half of the water. This reduces time and helps prevent heat damage while your hair is most vulnerable (when wet).

Focus on lifting your roots up as you go. This will help to set the shape as it dries.

You can also flip and dry to add lift:

4. Blow your hair out

Nothing beats a round brush blowout! You can use a classic, round brush and a blow dryer. I prefer a blow-dryer brush since it’s much easier to use just one thing.

When you get to the section at the occipital bone (the bump at the back of your head), move the brush upward.

This keeps the lift at your roots and allows you to stack the volume as you go.

Also, before moving on to the next section, ensure that the section you’re working on is 100% dry.

Another hair hack: use the cool shot button on your dryer to lock in each section after drying to make your blowout last longer.

For extra oomph, overdirect your hair: pull the brush slightly in the opposite direction of where you want the hair to fall.

5. Curl without collapsing

When using a tool with 2 hot plates, it naturally compresses the hair in the middle.

To add movement and texture without sacrificing volume, switch to a curling wand instead of an iron. A curling wand is gentler and less likely to collapse the hair.

Also, fine hair doesn’t need high heat to hold a curl. Lowering the temperature protects your strands while maintaining the natural body.

Curl away from the roots for the most volume, especially near the crown.

6. Teasing the modern way

Teasing isn’t just an 80s throwback–it’s a tried and true method for adding major volume.

Grab a fine tooth comb and work in small sections of hair at the crown.

For extra hold, spritz a light mist of hairspray on each section as you tease. Hold the section taut and gently backcomb the underside with short, controlled strokes toward the scalp.

This creates a cushion of volume at the root without tangling your hair.

After you finish the crown, move on to sections on the sides for balance.

You can see the difference teasing makes:

Smooth over the tops sections for a sleek, polished look. The key to backcombing is to not overdo it.

Finish with a final spritz of hairspray to hold everything in place.

7. Texture spray

Invest in a quality, texture spray for full, lifted hair that stays put. Unlike hairspray, texture spray adds grip and body without stiffness or stickiness. Spray this product from under the hair to build the volume up.
