The new year is coming, which means new year, new you, new updo! The holiday festivities are hectic, and it’s no secret a nice hairstyle for the ‘gram can take hours.

So, if you’re looking for a no-muss, no-fuss hairstyle that’s long-lasting, practically effortless, and will hold until the new year, here’s my go-to updo hair hack.

Tools and materials:

  • Hair elastics
  • Bobby pins
Sectioning hair into a half-up pony

1. Section hair

Section your hair into a half up and half down style, and tie it with a clear elastic.

Topsy tail the half pony

2. Topsy tail

Next, we’re going to do a topsy tail. Create an opening right above your hair tie and flip the ends of your hair through the hole. Pull your hair through, then separate the ends to tighten it.

Splitting hair into two sections

3. Split hair into two sections

Now, split your hair into two sections. You’ll want to do this with both the ponytail and the hair beneath it. Use another hair tie to tie it on each side. Don’t forget to tighten it.

4. Pulling hair through itself

For the next part, put your fingers under the twist.

Pulling hair through the hole

Grab the opposite ponytail, pull it through the twist, and just let it hang down.

Pulling the other side through the hole

Repeat the same process on the other side.

Alternating pulling hair through the sides

Keep repeating this process, alternating sides, until you’ve almost run out of hair. When attempting this updo hack, make sure you’re keeping each new section above the previous.

Tucking and securing the ends of hair

5. Tucking the ends in

With the remaining ends of your hair, combine them underneath the bun and tie them together with a hair tie. Tuck them underneath the bun and bobby pin them into place, so they’re no longer visible.

Adding bobby pins to secure the updo

6. Bobby pin in place

Once your bun starts looking something like mine, all you have left to do is bobby pin it into place for that extra security!

Pinching hair for added texture and volume

7. Add texture and volume

This is an optional step, but one of my favorite updo tricks is to pinch and pull some of the hair at the crown of my head for some texture, volume, and a more interesting look.

Pulling out curls and wisps for the front

If you like, pull out some wisps of hair from the front. leave them hanging or tuck them behind your ears.
