5 Super Cute and Easy Low Messy Bun Hairstyles
I love a good, messy bun for fall! Follow along with this tutorial to learn how to do a low, messy bun in 5 different ways. Let’s get started.
Tools and materials:
- Brush
- Hair tie
- Clear elastic
- A few bobby pins
Low messy bun updo 1
1. Ponytail and cross
Put your hair in a low ponytail and split it into two, even sections.
Then cross one section over the other.
This will create a loop opening.
2. Twist and pull through
Then twist the other end and pull it through the loop.
Pull the ends to tighten.
3. Knot 2
Make another knot right under that first knot in the same exact way.
4. Put a hair tie and tuck the ends
Then, take your hair tie and place it over the bun. If your ends get caught up, just pull them out.
With the ends hanging out, twist them…
…then wrap them around the bun, tucking them into the hair tie. No bobby pins needed!
5. Final touches
Pinch and pull for some texture.
And that’s your first, cute messy bun hairstyle.

1. Braid
Start with your hair in a low ponytail, then braid it all the way down, securing the end with a clear elastic.
2. Roll
Take the end of the braid and roll it up toward the top of your head.
3. Secure the bun
Then flatten the resulting braided bun against your head. I used 2 bobby pins to secure the bun in place.
You might need more depending on your hair type. And that’s it for this look! It’s the perfect messy bun updo to dress up or down.

1. Low ponytail with little bun
Make a low ponytail, pulling your hair through a clear elastic about twice, then pull the top through so it creates a little bun.
2. Twist 2 tails and do a topsy tail
Split the tail into 2 equal sections and twist them.
Now, bring them up over the bun and tie them with an elastic, still with some ends hanging out.
Then, do a topsy tail by flipping the ends up, underneath and into the loop. See video at 2:25 - 2:35 if you want to see how to do a topsy tail.
3. Twist and pull bun through the loop
Twist those 2 strands, creating another opening at the top.
Then take the opening and stretch it over your bun.
4. Hide the ends
Tighten the ends by pulling them.
Finesse the bun a little, stretching it out a bit. Finally, combine the ends and twist them.
Then wrap them around the bun, bobby pinning it at the base of the bun.
Here’s the look:

1. Ponytail and bun
Put your hair in a low ponytail, then put it through part of the way to make a small bun, as in the last updo.
2. Twist the tail around
Twist the tail and wrap the ends around the bun.
You can see, I’m holding the inside of my bun with my right hand to access the hair tie. Then tuck the ends into the hair tie.
Finally, pinch and pull your bun to get it just right.
Pinch and pull the top at your scalp to add some volume and texture.
And that’s it for this easy but flawless low messy bun.

1. Ponytail and knot
Start with your hair in a low ponytail. Then pull the tail up and twist it, create an opening for a knot and pull the ends through it.
2. Hold and secure the bun
Hold on to your knot and with the ends hanging out, gather them underneath the bun.
Hold on to it and take a hair tie to wrap it around the bun.
Twist the ends so that they lay at the bottom and add about 2 bobby pins to secure everything in place.
Here’s the final look. It reminds me of one of those sock buns, but way easier!
