Chic shag haircut

1. Chic shag

This is a great haircut for women over 50. It’s effortless, a little bit edgy, and it brings movement and softness to the face.

Chic shag haircut

The beauty of a shag is that it works with your hair’s natural texture. If you’ve got a little wave or bend, this cut makes it look intentional, not messy.

The layers add lift around the crown. They add softness around the jawline, which helps draw the eye up, giving a more youthful appearance. Another thing that’s great about this haircut is that it’s super low maintenance.

Blunt bob haircut

2. Blunt bob

The blunt bob has a clean, polished shape that instantly lifts the face. The strong, sharp line brings structure and definition, especially around the jawline, which is an area that a lot of us start to lose as we get older.

It’s also very versatile. You can wear it straight for a chic look. You can add a soft wave for something more relaxed and modern.

You can do the classic chin-length to go bold and graphic. If that feels too dramatic for you, you can take it to the collarbone. The longer version is called a lob and is a softer version of the same cut.

The blunt edge gives the illusion of fuller, thicker hair. This is useful for women over 50, as hair begins to thin when estrogen levels decrease. It’s bold, elegant, and timeless.

Face-framing layers

3. Face-framing layers

Unlike the shag, which has layers all throughout the hair, this cut has layers in the front framing the face. Face-framing layers are placed strategically to add softness and shape.

Face-framing layers

This is the perfect look for someone who wants to keep their length, but is nervous about going all out with layers. The face-framing layers add some lift, dimension, and visual interest.

The layers draw attention to your cheekbones and jawline. They help open up the face, which is especially helpful if you feel your features have lost some definition as you age.

Fringe haircut

4. Fringe

This one isn’t a cut on its own. It’s an add-on, but a powerful one at that. A fringe can transform any haircut. The options are endless.

You can do soft curtain bangs, wispy side swept bangs, wispy front bangs, or a full blunt fringe if you want something bold.

Fringe haircut

Fringes can be especially flattering for women over 50 because they bring focus to the eyes. They also soften the forehead lines and add a bit of structure and intention to your style.

If you’re curious but uneasy about the commitment, you can start with curtain bangs. They’re low-commitment and grow out gracefully. They can be styled to blend right into your layers.

Modern pixie haircut

5, Modern pixie

Like any other hairstyle, there are many ways to shape this cut.

One version is tight on the sides to create lift and structure with length and movement throughout the top for a soft, modern finish. That extra volume is flattering for women with fine or thinning hair.

When it’s cut well, this look is very low maintenance.

Another version is to go longer at the nape. This cut is referred to as a Bixie because it blends the elements of a bob and a pixie.

Very much appreciate your haircut article! I’m 72, and was so tired of my hair looking like a blob on my head… not providing anything toward enhancing my features. (I have fine, natural curly hair… not as thick as it used to be either) I recently had my hair cut into a layered pixie. WOW! What a difference! It enhanced the curl/waviness of my hair, and literally took off at least ten years from my looks, not to mention it is So Much easier to take care of. Yes, you do have to have it trimmed and shaped a bit more often, but it’s well worth it!!! Oh Yes! Very well worth it!
