Hairbrushes and combs collect more than just stray hairs. Over time, they build up oils from your scalp, leftover styling products, dust, and even dead skin cells. A dirty brush not only looks unappealing but can also transfer build-up back into freshly washed hair, making it feel greasy faster.

One simple, effective, and gentle way to deep clean your brushes and combs is with Murphy Oil Soap. Traditionally used for wood cleaning, Murphy Oil Soap is biodegradable, non-abrasive, and great for removing grime from grooming tools without damaging the bristles or handles.

Tools and materials:

  • Murphy Oil Soap
  • Warm water
  • A bowl or sink for soaking
  • Old toothbrush
  • Towel for drying

Why use Murphy Oil Soap?

  • Breaks down oils and product residue without harsh chemicals.
  • Safe on natural and synthetic bristles, as well as wooden or plastic handles.
  • Gentle and eco-friendly, making it a great alternative to harsh detergents.

1. Remove any hair

Before soaking, pull out as much hair as possible from the bristles or teeth. Use a comb, a pair of scissors, or even a toothpick to loosen strands stuck at the base.

2. Make the cleaning solution

Fill a bowl or sink with warm water. Add about ¼ cup of Murphy Oil Soap per quart of water and stir to combine. The solution should look slightly cloudy.

3. Soak your brushes and combs

Place your brushes and combs in the diluted solution. Let them soak for 15–20 minutes. This loosens oils, dust, and product build-up.

Tip: If you have wooden-handled brushes, avoid fully submerging them. Instead, dip only the bristles or gently scrub them with a Murphy Oil Soap solution-soaked cloth.

4. Scrub gently

After soaking, use an old toothbrush to scrub between the bristles and along the base. For combs, run the brush through the teeth to remove build-up.

5. Rinse thoroughly

Rinse your brushes and combs under warm running water to remove any soapy residue.

6. Dry completely

Shake off excess water and pat with a towel. Lay brushes and combs bristle-side down on a clean towel to air-dry. Avoid using them until they are fully dry to prevent mildew.

How often should you clean hairbrushes?

  • Every 1–2 weeks if you use styling products regularly.
  • Once a month for minimal product use.
