HOW TO DRESS FOR AWKWARD WEATHER

From the title of this post you can probably guess that I am from the UK. Every year when we come out of winter, like every other Brit, I start buying pretty sundresses and planning hot weather outfits like I live in Barbados. And of course, every year I'm disappointed!

With Britain's wettest summer in decades around the corner (waaaaa), I've put together some outfits that will help you battle the elements while still looking stylish.

I always try to forego the coat and make do with a jumper this time of year. Even if it's windy, you'll often find you overheat in a coat. If you do overestimate the chill, a jumper can also be easily folded up and carried in a bag, tied around your waist or just slung over your arm, whereas coats are much more cumbersome.

Here I'm wearing a sleeveless knit midi dress from French Connection underneath a rollneck black jumper. I wanted something sleeveless underneath to avoid overheating, and a jumper looked much better than a coat with my bare legs. I've kept the boots and bag black to make the whole outfit more cohesive.

Knitted midi skirts and dresses are generally better for this sort of in-between weather than jeans, as they regulate your temperature better. I also think they're a great option for raining. Often, dressing according to the weather starts with choosing your footwear, which obviously needs to be closed-toe if it's raining, and these ribbed knit midi skirts look great with trainers or loafers. I wore a v-neck camisole for this day exploring Naples, but for Britain's less predictable weather, layer up with a jumper, cardigan or a leather jacket.

You can see how versatile that black cami is as I'm wearing it here too, with another style of midi skirt, also paired with trainers. I love pleated midi skirts - they feel very fun and girly but can be toughened up with a pair of chunky boots, especially if your skirt is a gorgeous dark colour like this olive shade of green.

Again, you can pop a jumper or cropped jacket over the camisole to protect from the wind, and you have your oversized tote to put it in if it gets too hot.

There's absolutely no reason why you can't wear a pretty mini dress in bad weather! Keep it long-sleeved to balance out the hemline, and add a pair of opaque tights for function, or patterned ones for fashion. I was walking a lot this day so paired with my comfiest pair of boots, which happened to be quite wintery, but you could go for a sleek leather pair of boots, or some chunky loafers, to look more season-appropriate.
