No-sew, No-stress Way to Shorten Sleeves
Sleeves are too long, but you're not in the mood to roll them up the usual way? Don’t worry, I’ve got you.
This is a quick and chic styling trick that shows you how to shorten sleeves — no scissors, no needle, no hassle.
We’ll turn those awkward long sleeves into polished three-quarter sleeves in under a minute. The best part? No sewing, no stress.
1. Unbutton the cuff
Start by unbuttoning the cuff of your shirt sleeve. If your shirt has a second button further up the sleeve (often called a gauntlet or placket button), go ahead and unbutton that too.
2. Fold the sleeve up
Take the cuff and fold the sleeve up, turning it inside out as you go. Make this fold as high as you want your final sleeve length to be (typically around mid-forearm).
3. Fold the sleeve back down
Now fold the cuff back down over the fold you just made. The edge of the cuff should meet the bottom edge of that fold, creating a clean layered look.
4. Button the cuff
Rebutton the cuff, but this time around your forearm where the shirt fits snugly. This step is what keeps everything in place — no sliding, no readjusting all day long.
5. Tuck in any extra fabric
If there’s any loose or poking fabric, simply tuck it into the fold. You want a neat, tidy finish that looks intentional, not accidental.
Style tip: choose the right shirt
This technique works best with shirts made of cotton, poplin, or other structured fabrics. Skip slippery materials like silk — they tend to unravel and won’t hold the fold as well.
