1. Inspect the zipper

Check the zipper to make sure no fabric, thread, or debris is caught in the teeth. If there’s anything stuck in there, gently remove it before moving onto the next step.

2. Clean the zipper

If the zipper looks dirty or grimy, clean it with mild soap and water using a cloth. Dry the zip thoroughly before applying the Vaseline.

3. Apply Vaseline

Use a cotton swab or a toothpick to pick up a small amount of Vaseline. Then gently rub the Vaseline onto the teeth of the zipper where it’s stuck. Focus on the area just above and below the slider.

4. Move the slider

Slowly move the slider up and down to distribute the Vaseline along the teeth. Apply a little more Vaseline, if needed.

5. Wipe off the excess

Once the zipper is moving freely, use a soft cloth or tissue to wipe away any excess Vaseline. This prevents it from transferring to your clothing or bag.

Tips:

  • Use just enough Vaseline to loosen up the zipper. Too much can make this hack very messy!
  • Be careful not to get Vaseline on the surrounding fabric to avoid stains.
  • If you don’t have Vaseline, a bar of soap or a graphite pencil can also work for this zipper trick.
