DIY Denim Flower Top

I got the idea for this denim flower top when I saw bags of denim flower shapes in my local craft shop.
You want a firm backing to attach them to. I had a vintage doily I’d thrifted so I tried to find something similar.
Tools and materials:
- 30 - 35 hand made or purchased denim flower shapes
- Pearl beads
- Square lace doily
- 3/4” (2 cm) wide ribbon
- Hot glue gun
- Scissors
- Pins
- Sewing machine or hand sewing needle and thread
1. Gather the materials
If you have a lot of denim scraps, you can make your own flowers. I bought mine.
My vintage doily is quite thick and means the back will look as good as the front.
2. Attach flowers
Arrange the flowers to cover the doily completely.
Overlap them in layers for total coverage.
Plan your design first, then hot glue the flowers in place individually.
When you’ve finished, you shouldn’t be able to see the backing fabric at all.
3. Pearl flower centers
Choose pearl beads of a reasonable size for the flower centers.
Hot glue them to the centers of the flowers on the top layer.
4. Attach the ribbon straps
Cut a shorter piece of ribbon to tie around your neck.
Attach the center to one of the points of your backing fabric.
Attach a longer piece of ribbon to the two points next to the neck tie. These need to be long enough to tie in the center of your back.
Glue and hand or machine sew the ribbons in place.
5. To wear
Tie the shorter piece of ribbon around your neck.
Take the two longer pieces behind your back and tie them in a bow in the center.
Cute DIY denim flower top
You could wear your denim flower top on its own, as a glamorous evening top or casually with shorts or jeans.
I like to wear it over a loose button through shirt.
It gives shape and a corset effect to the shirt.
