Easy Makeup Tutorial for Older Women Over 60

Today, I want to share some makeup tips for defining your eyes and lips as you age.

I’m 76 myself, so I understand the importance of adapting your makeup to suit the changes in your face as you get older.

As we age, our features naturally evolve — our eyes may become crepey or less defined, eyebrows may thin out, lashes may lose their fullness, and lips may lose volume.

In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through eye makeup tips specifically for older women, including makeup for women over 60, so you can look and feel your best at any age.

I'll explain the steps I used to accentuate my features.

The products I'm using today are from the  Look Fabulous Forever range, made specifically for mature skin. However, you can achieve the same results with any brand of product.

1. Start with your brows

The first thing to focus on is your brows.

Well-defined brows can frame your face and instantly enhance the look of your eyes. I prefer to keep my brows subtle by using a soft gray or blonde brow pencil, which blends nicely with my gray hair.

The key is to keep the color light — avoid bold, dark brows, as they can look too harsh on older faces. After applying the pencil, I use a spoolie brush to blend the color and soften the look.

2. Apply eye primer

Next, we need a good base for the eyeshadow. Always start with an eye primer to create a smooth, long-lasting canvas for your eyeshadow. This step ensures that your eyeshadow stays in place and doesn’t settle into any fine lines.

3. Apply eyeshadow

For this look, I’m using a matte eyeshadow palette in soft grays and blues. The key to eye makeup for older women is subtlety — create shape and definition without going overboard.

I’ve applied a pale gray shade all over my eyelid for a soft wash of color. Then, using a slightly deeper blue shade, I add definition to the outer corners of my eyes, blending it well into the crease.

I keep the application light and gentle, focusing on creating depth rather than a heavy layer of shadow.

4. Blend

Once you’ve added your eyeshadow, use a blending brush to soften the edges and ensure that everything looks seamless. The goal is to create a soft, natural look.

Remember, the more you blend, the softer and more youthful the makeup will appear.

5. Apply eyeliner

For eyeliner, I’ve chosen a navy blue pencil. I apply it as close to the lash line as possible to define the eyes without making the line too thick.

I extend the eyeliner slightly at the outer corners, but I keep the wing subtle — not dramatic. This soft definition helps make the eyes appear larger and more awake.

6. Set the eyeliner

To ensure the eyeliner stays in place, I set it with a matching eyeshadow. Using a small wedge brush, I lightly apply the same navy blue shade over the eyeliner to lock it in place and give it a softer finish.

7. Add mascara

Lashes can naturally thin out as we age, so a coat of mascara can do wonders to make your eyes pop. Apply a light coat of mascara to both your upper and lower lashes.

This step helps open up the eyes and gives them more definition without looking too heavy or clumpy.

Lining the lips

8. Define your lips

Now, let’s move on to your lips. As we age, our lips can become thinner, so the key is to define them without over-lining.

Start with a lip liner in a shade that matches your natural lip color.

9. Fill in with lip liner

Then I fill in the rest of my lips with the same lip liner. This helps create a base color that will hold your lipstick in place and prevent it from feathering.

10. Apply lipstick

On top of the lip liner, I apply my favorite lipstick in a soft plum shade. This color is vibrant enough to make a statement but not too bold or overpowering.

11. Final touches

To keep everything in place and help your makeup last all day, I finish off with a setting spray. This adds a nice dewy finish and ensures your makeup stays fresh, especially as we age and our skin can become drier.
