8 Clever Lip Balm Beauty Hacks Every Woman Should Know
Most of us keep a tube of lip balm within arm's reach—but chances are you're only using it for one thing.
Because lip balm is packed with moisturizing oils, protective waxes, and skin-conditioning ingredients, it can solve several everyday beauty problems when you're in a pinch. From taming stubborn flyaways to soothing dry cuticles, this little beauty staple can earn a permanent place in your makeup bag.
Here are eight beauty hacks that genuinely work—and why.
1. Tame Flyaways in Seconds
Why it works
Lip balm contains lightweight waxes and emollients that coat individual hairs, helping keep short flyaways in place while adding a subtle healthy shine.
How to do it
- Apply a tiny amount of lip balm to your fingertips.
- Lightly smooth over flyaways.
- Avoid using too much, as excess product can make hair look greasy.
2. Smooth and Moisturize Dry Cuticles
Why it works
Lip balm creates a protective barrier that helps reduce moisture loss while softening dry skin around the nails.
How to do it
- Massage a small amount into each cuticle.
- Reapply throughout the day whenever your hands feel dry.
3. Keep Brows Neatly in Place
Why it works
The waxes in lip balm provide light hold, helping unruly brows stay in place without adding color.
How to do it
- Rub a tiny amount onto a clean spoolie or fingertip.
- Brush brows upward and outward.
- Use sparingly for the most natural finish.
4. Create a Natural Dewy Highlight
Why it works
Instead of adding shimmer, lip balm reflects light naturally, giving skin a fresh, healthy-looking glow.
How to do it
Tap a tiny amount onto the tops of your cheekbones.
Blend gently with clean fingertips.
Skip this trick if your skin is very oily.
5. Soothe Dry Skin Around Your Nose
Why it works
Frequent nose blowing can damage the skin barrier. Lip balm helps seal in moisture and reduce tightness until you can apply your regular moisturizer.
How to do it
Apply a thin layer to dry areas around the nostrils.
Reapply whenever needed.
6. Prevent Blisters from New Shoes
Why it works
Lip balm reduces friction between your skin and your shoes, helping minimize rubbing that can lead to blisters.
How to do it
Apply directly to areas that usually rub.
This works best before irritation starts.
7. Remove a Tight Ring More Easily
Why it works
Lip balm acts as a lubricant, reducing friction between the ring and your skin.
How to do it
- Apply lip balm around the ring and knuckle.
- Twist gently while pulling the ring off.
- If your finger is swollen, painful, or discolored, seek professional assistance rather than forcing the ring off.
8. Rescue Dry Knuckles and Fingertips
Why it works
Lip balm forms a protective barrier that helps lock in moisture, making it an excellent emergency treatment when hand cream isn't nearby.
How to do it
- Massage a small amount into dry areas.
- Allow a minute for it to absorb before touching fabrics or paper.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you use lip balm on your skin?
Yes. Most lip balms are formulated for use on the delicate skin of the lips, so they can also be used on small areas of intact skin such as cuticles, knuckles, or around the nose. Avoid applying lip balm to broken skin or irritated eyes.
Can lip balm replace moisturizer?
Not entirely. Lip balm works best as an occlusive layer that helps reduce moisture loss. It's ideal for small dry spots or on-the-go touch-ups, but a dedicated face or body moisturizer is usually a better long-term option for larger areas.
What type of lip balm works best for these hacks?
A simple, fragrance-free balm with moisturizing ingredients like petrolatum, beeswax, shea butter, or lanolin is often the most versatile. Strongly tinted or heavily flavored balms are less suitable for many of these beauty uses.
Lip balm is one of the hardest-working products in any beauty bag. Beyond keeping your lips soft, it can tame flyaways, smooth brows, soften cuticles, add a natural glow, and solve several everyday beauty dilemmas in seconds.
The next time you reach for your favorite tube, remember—it can do much more than moisturize your lips.

My hands crack and bleed in the winter time. Using chap stick on it clears it up very quickly.
I live in Florida where wearing full makeup will just slide down your face..
After the beach or late for work or really whenever, I always reach for my moisturizing chap stick for anything that feels dry ! I have used it under eyes, on my wrinkles (yes I’m that old lol) but really anywhere! Just like you would use Vaseline. Kind of water resistant too but still moisturizes.. Quick fix.
