1. Measure and cut

Try the shirt one and mark the approximate position of your waist.

Lay the shirt flat and button it up. Line up the side seams and lower edges.

Draw a line across the front of the shirt at the level of your mark. Make sure it comes between two buttons.

Cut off the bottom of the shirt in a straight line.

2. Trim

If the lower edge of the piece you cut is curved, cut the curve off to give you a straight edge.

3. Gather

Turn the lower edge to the wrong side and sew in place.

Sew one or two rows of gathering stitches around the top edge.

Leave the ends long.

4. Pin and sew

Gather the edge to fit around the bottom of the shirt.

Adjust the gathers as necessary.

Starting at the button placket, pin the gathered edge evenly around the bottom of the shirt with the right sides together and the raw edges lined up.

Sew in place, outside the gathering stitches so they don’t show on the right side.

Try the shirt on and if necessary adjust the position of the lower buttons to match the buttonholes.

Now you have a stylish peplum top that definitely isn’t boring. I like to leave the bottom buttons undone for a bit of extra oomph.

Flannel shirts will never be the same again!
