Tools and materials:
- Old denim jacket
- Cardigan with tassels
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
- Sewing clips or pins
1. Cut the sleeves off your denim jacket
Start by taking your old denim jacket and cutting off the sleeves. Set the sleeves aside for now.
2. Cut the bottom off the jacket
Next, grab your scissors again and cut along the bottom hem of the jacket. This step will help you create a more cropped look.
Again, feel free to cut it as short as you like, but keep in mind that you’ll be adding a new bottom piece soon.
3. Cut the sleeves off the cardigan
Now, take the bright cardigan you’ve chosen and cut off the sleeves just below the shoulders.
I like to line up the cardigan with the jacket's sleeve holes to ensure a good fit while cutting.
4. Cut the front part of the cardigan
Take the part of the cardigan that hangs down in front (with tassels) and cut it off in a straight line.
This piece will become the new bottom part of your denim jacket, giving it a fun, stylish edge with those tassels!
5. Attach the cardigan sleeves
Turn your denim jacket inside out so you can easily attach the new fabric.
Then, take the cardigan sleeves and clip them to the inside of the denim jacket's sleeve holes.
Align the edges carefully and use sewing clips or pins to secure them in place.
Make sure both sleeves are even and positioned symmetrically.
6. Sew the sleeves into place
Using a sewing machine, sew along the edges of the cardigan sleeves to attach them securely to the inside of the jacket’s sleeves.
Remove the clips or pins as you sew. Make sure to sew slowly and carefully for a neat finish.
7. Attach the cardigan front to the bottom of the jacket
Now, take the front piece of the cardigan (the part you cut off with the tassels) and attach it to the bottom of your denim jacket. Line it up carefully and clip it in place.
Sew along the edge, making sure to secure it tightly. This will give the jacket a fun, colorful, and textured bottom.
Here’s how the jacket looked before the transformation.

Denim jacket upcycle idea
Now that you’ve sewn everything into place, here’s the revamped jacket!
The combination of the denim and the vibrant cardigan sleeves, along with the playful tassels at the bottom, gives it a fresh, trendy vibe.
I love how the new pieces come together with two contrasting colors and fabrics, creating a unique, one-of-a-kind look.
