Turn an Old Sweater Into a Winter Beanie
Here’s a really quick and easy way to make a DIY beanie hat from an old sweater.
I used a chunky knit cable sweater, but any style will work.
Try it and see how easy it is.

Tools and materials:
- Old sweater
- Beanie as template
- Pins or fabric clips
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
1. Cut out the beanie shape
Lay your sweater on a flat surface and line up the side seams and lower edges.
Fold a beanie in half and place it on the sweater.
Line it up with the side seam and lower edges to make it even easier. You’ll have the ribbing at the bottom of your hat.
Cut around the beanie shape.
2. Sewing
Open out the cut fabric and leave it joined at the side seam.
Refold the hat so the right sides are facing and pin or clip the edges together.
Set your sewing machine for a zigzag or stretch stitch and sew the raw edges together.
3. Shape the top
Fold the beanie so the seam is in the center.
Use the same stitch to sew the top of the folded edges together for 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm).
