Why Vaseline works for blisters

Blisters form when repeated friction causes the layers of skin to separate, allowing fluid to build up between them.

Vaseline acts as a protective barrier, reducing friction between your skin and the pair of shoes that you’re wearing.

Here’s how to prevent blisters using Vaseline:

1. Start with clean feet

Before applying Vaseline, wash your feet with soap and water to remove dirt and sweat.

Dry them thoroughly with a towel, as moisture can increase friction and lead to blisters.

Suffer from sweaty feet? Apply a small amount of foot powder.

2. Identify high-risk areas

Focus on areas of your feet where blisters are most likely to form, such as:

  • The back of the heels
  • Underneath and between the toes
  • The sides of the feet
  • The balls of the feet
  • Any spots that feel tight or rub against your shoes when walking

3. Apply Vaseline to these areas

Take a small amount of Vaseline and use your fingertips or a cotton swab to apply it directly to the high-friction areas.

Spread a thin, even layer to create a smooth, protective coating.

Be careful not to apply too much Vaseline, otherwise this will feel greasy and slippery.

4. Put on a pair of socks

Unless you’re wearing toeless shoes, pop on a pair of socks to get the best results from this hack.

This step helps to reduce sweat and stops the Vaseline from potentially marking your shoes. If you’re wearing ballet pumps or similar, try wearing a pair of no-show socks.
