Getting Rid of My Long Nails for Cute Short White Nails

I love my new short white nails. I was so nervous about cutting off my natural long nails, but it was definitely worth it. I’m going to tell you guys all about why and how I made this transition.
Having long natural nails was beautiful, but they required so much upkeep. I had to be extra careful when doing everyday tasks like washing dishes and even showering.
Even with acrylic powder to strengthen them, my nails were prone to breakage.
When you add so many materials to long natural nails to maintain them, they don’t even look natural anymore!
So, I decided it was time for a fresh start. If you’re considering making the switch to shorter nails, follow along—I’ll show you exactly how to do it!
Tools and materials:
- Nail clippers
- Nail file
- Nail drill with a ceramic bit
- Argan oil
- Orangewood stick
- Gel nail polish (base coat, color, topcoat)
- Mild soap and water
- Large makeup brush
- Small nail brush
1. Trim the length
Start by cutting your nails down to your desired short length using nail clippers. Don’t worry if they look a little uneven—you’ll shape them later.
2. Remove old gel or polish
If you have gel polish or any old nail product on your nails, use a nail drill with a ceramic bit to remove it carefully.
Take your time to avoid damaging the natural nail underneath. You can use a large makeup brush to brush away the dust.
3. Shape your nails
Use a nail file to shape your nails. Make sure all nails are even and smooth at the edges.
4. Prep your cuticles
Apply a drop of argan oil to each nail.
Gently push up your cuticles using an orangewood stick.
5. Wash your nails
Rinse your hands with mild soap and water to remove any dust and oil. Dry them completely before moving on to the next step.
6. Apply nail polish
Apply a base coat first, then your chosen nail color (I went with white for a chic, fresh look), and finish with a topcoat to seal everything in.
Use a small detail brush to apply polish close to the cuticles. Allow each layer to dry properly before applying the next.
