Tools and materials:
- Tail comb
- Claw clip
- Belt from bathrobe
- 1 bobby pin
- 2 hair elastics
1. Part your hair
For this heatless curls hack, I’m going to part down the middle with a zigzag part.
This way, when you remove the wrap, the part is more disguised. Don’t forget the back:
2. Separate your hair
Separate your hair into 2 equal sections. Tie off the section you aren’t working with and wrap it in a bun, securing it with a claw clip.
3. Place the belt starting at the back
For these reverse heatless curls you’ll need a bathrobe belt. If your robe belt is thin and you find your curls are too tight, double up the belt on each side.
Start by laying the belt at the back of your head in a V shape.
Secure it with a bobby pin on the side that you aren’t starting with to prevent the belt from sliding while we wrap the hair.
4. Wrap your first section
Grab a section of hair at the nape of your neck and split that in 2. Place the belt between them.
Take 1 section and lay it on top of the robe tie and pull it around the back, to its original side.
Do the same with the strand on the opposite side.
5. Continue wrapping, adding in hair as you go
Much like a French braid, pick up a new section of hair and add it to your existing section of hair.
Instead of weaving it, wrap it around the front of the robe tie and back to the side where it started.
Repeat with the other strand–adding in hair and wrapping it over the belt and back to where it started.
Keep in mind pulling the hair toward the crown of your head. This avoids creating bulk on the side that would make side-sleeping uncomfortable. You want the wrapped belt to lay as high up as possible, toward your part.
Also, by wrapping each piece in opposite directions, your curls will go in varying directions, resulting in more volume.
Continue to wrap close to the root – you don’t want it to be baggy at this stage.
6. Wrap your bangs and secure the ends
If you have long bangs, include those too. At this point, we’re no longer adding in more hair.
Simply continue to wrap each section until you run out of hair.
If you have layers, you’ll notice some ends sticking out. Don’t worry – this will just add to the texture of the curls.
Secure the ends with a hair elastic.
A few tips to help you master this heatless curls hack:
If you’re new to heatless curling, try the original method first, just to get accustomed to the wrapping. Then try out this reverse method since working from the back can be tricky at first.
Another tip is to tug the robe tie as you go along so it doesn’t bunch up. You don’t want the shape to warp if you wrap too tightly.
Regarding the dampness of my hair with heatless curling: I always go for about 10% damp. It looks dry but it’s cool to the touch. How wet your hair should be depends on its thickness but it should be 100% dry before removing the robe tie. Wetter hair means tighter, more intense curls once they dry, but you run the risk of it being damp when you remove it.
If you don’t like the ends of your curls being too tight, double up the end of your robe tie. When there’s no more hair left to add in, simply continue to wrap the front pieces around the doubled robe tie.
7. Repeat on the other side and tie up the ends
Remove the claw clip and repeat this process on the other side. Then, to keep the robe tie out of your face, cross the ends in front:
Then tie them in the back:
Alternatively, you can loop it on top.
Then use a bobby pin to secure the ends.
8. Remove
In the morning before showering, I cover this updo with a towel so they don’t get wet.
Gently separate the robe tie from the curls to remove it.
Once the robe tie is out, shake the curls out gently instead of pulling them apart to avoid frizz.
There’s undeniable volume!
If you have bangs, separate and brush through them with your fingers so they all go into the same kind of curl. You’ll see any frizz start to die away.
I like to dry my bangs before doing these overnight curls but I know some people prefer to go completely heatless.
These reverse heatless curls are such a game-changer if you want healthy hair.
Here you can see the results after sleeping in them when the hair started off slightly damp. You get much more curl, volume and lift from the roots.
If you prefer to start with dry hair, you can leave this in for just 2 hours. The results are softer and still beautiful, it just won’t last as long.
