How to Fix a Broken Jeans Zipper in 6 Easy Steps
In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to fix a broken jeans zipper.
You can use this broken zipper hack to learn how to fix a zipper on anything.
There are few things more frustrating than a zipper breaking on an otherwise perfectly fine article of clothing.
With this hack, you won’t have to toss anything. Let’s save those jeans!
Tools and materials:
- Scissors
- Hand sewing needle and thread
- Needle-nose pliers
1. Cut a new opening
If your zipper has jumped the tracks from 1 side you’re going to have to reattach it and create a new zipper stopper.
In order to get the zipper back on the tracks, bring it as low down as you can.
Take a pair of scissors and cut an opening between 2 of the teeth on the side that needs to be reattached.
2. Reattach the zipper
Now that you have an opening, bring the new bottom zipper tooth into the zipper. It may take a bit of maneuvering.
Just move the excess teeth from the bottom behind the zipper and slip the teeth from the new start line into the zipper.
3. Thread the needle and anchor the stitch
Now you’re going to need to make a new zipper stopper so the zipper can’t go down to the split teeth.
Take a needle and thread and pull the thread halfway through, so it’s doubled up. Then make a knot at the end of the thread.
Put your needle in 1 or 2 teeth above the cut and thread it through the zipper fabric. Anchor the stitch by putting the needle through the 2 threads just below the end knot and pull.
4. Create a new zipper stopper
Thread the needle from the front to the back of the zipper, over to the opposite side, and then from the back to the front starting again.
Continue threading from front to back, and side to side, looping it around at least a handful of times until you’ve created a new sturdy stopper with the thread.
5. Close the bottom section
Sew some extra stitches to close the opening at the bottom of the zipper at the broken section.
6. Final security measure
For 1 extra and final security measure, you can tighten the zipper a bit.
Take a pair of needle-nosed pliers and give the side of the zipper a little pinch to make sure it doesn’t pop off again and create the same problem as before.
