Handbags go everywhere with us, which means they quickly pick up smells from all the things we toss inside of them.

Over time, that can leave your favorite bag smelling less than fresh. But the good news is there are some easy habits that can help keep your handbag at its best.

1. Empty It Out Often

Take everything out of your bag at least once a week. Old receipts, tissues, and food wrappers are small things that easily get forgotten but can cause smells. A quick clear-out makes a big difference.

2. Give the Inside a Wipe

Use a soft, slightly damp cloth to wipe down the interior. For fabric linings, sprinkle in some baking soda, let it sit overnight, then shake it out the next day. Always double-check your bag’s care instructions before cleaning.

3. Keep an Odor Absorber Inside

A little pouch of baking soda, activated charcoal, or even a dryer sheet can help keep smells at bay. Swap them out every few weeks so they stay effective.

4. Add a Light Freshener

If you like a hint of scent, try a lavender sachet, a cedar block, or a cotton pad with a drop of essential oil tucked inside a small pouch.

5. Let It Breathe

Don’t keep your handbag sealed up for too long. When you’re not using it, leave it open in a cool, dry spot so fresh air can circulate.
