Tools and materials:
- 3 large square bandanas or scarves
- Fabric marker
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Pins
- Iron
- Safety pin or Kirby grip
- Sewing machine
1. Prepare the bandanas
Lay one of the cotton squares flat.
Mark and cut out a 2 inch (5 cm) square from one corner.
Use as a template to cut a square from one of the adjacent corners.
Cut a second bandana to match.
2. Sew the seams
Pin the two squares together with the right sides facing.
Sew the side and bottom seams between the cut-outs.
3. Shape the base
Sew the opposite sides of the cut-outs together, aligning the two seams.
Turn the bag right side out.
4. Make the handle
Cut two 2 inch (5 cm) wide strips from the third bandana.
Fold them in half lengthways with the right side inside and press.
Sew the long edges together.
Use a safety pin or Kirby grip to turn the handles right side out.
Press them flat.
5. Attach the handles
Find the center of the top edge of the bag.
Pin and sew the ends of the handles inside the bag, an equal distance from the center point.
DIY bandana tote bag
And your tote is finished!
You can stiffen it by ironing fusible interfacing to the inside before sewing, or just slide a couple of pieces of cardboard inside the finished bag.
