1. How to line things up

Following the natural direction of the lower lash line upwards gives you the perfect angle for the bottom of your wing.

For the top half, hold the string horizontally, lining it up with the highest point of your eyelid. You can go lower, but try not to go above this point, or the angle can look unnatural.

2. Apply eyeliner to the string

You can buy a tool to hold your string, or just use your hands. I’ll show you how to do it using your hands. Use some eyeliner or eyeshadow to draw along the length of the string.

3. Use the string to draw your guides

Place the string between the forefinger and thumb by the temple area.

Guide the lower half of the string towards the outer corner of your nose. You can pull the string slightly higher for a more lifted look, or slightly lower to avoid the crease.

Once you’re happy with the placement, gently press the string to the skin and work it backwards and forwards to leave a slight imprint.

If the line doesn’t get to all the concaves and curves of the eye socket, use your finger to press it down.

This is just a guide. It’s not a stencil, but it really does help map out a clean starting point for your wing. There might be some excess where the lines meet, but we can clean that up later with a little bit of micellar water on a brush.

4. Fill in the blanks

Start filling in your wing with some eyeliner using an angled liner brush.

5. Clean and cover

Clean any extra lines the string left behind, using a flat brush and micellar water.

Take a smaller angled brush and dip it into whatever base makeup you used (whether that’s concealer or foundation). Use it to perfect those lines and cover any areas that the micellar water might have removed.

When you do the second eye, make sure you look straight into the mirror to make sure to match the angle and trajectory of the first side.

If your eyes aren’t perfectly identical, don’t be afraid to adjust the angle slightly to make them look as symmetrical as possible.

6. Extend the line in

If you want your eyeliner to extend all the way to the inner corner without taking up any lid space, apply it underneath your top lashline, working it between the lashes. This gives the illusion of a full eyeliner look without crowding the lid.

Tilt your head back slightly and look down to stretch the lid and give yourself a better angle. Looking down will help you gently blink onto the brush as you glide it along the length of the top waterline.

Curling the lashes

7. Lashes

Curl your lashes to lift and open the eyes.

Priming the lashes

Apply a coat of mascara primer to add some length to the natural lashes.

Applying mascara

Then apply some mascara. Avoid false lashes or going too heavy on mascara to keep the wing as the star of the show.
