1. Exfoliating
Exfoliating keeps the skin cell turnover rate active which helps brighten and clear the skin. It also allows other skincare products to be better absorbed.
Be sure not to over-exfoliate by sticking to 2 times per week, maximum.
Exfoliating products fall under 2 categories: chemical and physical.
Chemical exfoliants use alpha and beta hydroxy acids to gently dissolve dead skin cells.
Physical exfoliants manually remove those skin cells with tools like a brush, glove, sponges or a scrub.
When choosing an exfoliant, consider your entire skincare routine. If you use retinols or benzoyl peroxide for acne, then you don’t want to aggravate the skin even more with a harsh exfoliant.
Chemical exfoliation
Believe it or not, chemical exfoliants tend to be mild and gentle to the skin.
This makes it the ideal choice for people with sensitive or acne-prone skin. If you have oily or thick skin, you can opt for a stronger variety.
Physical exfoliation
This method is better suited for oily or thick skin. In my opinion, you should be more careful with this method to ensure that you don’t over-exfoliate.
Regardless of which method you choose, if you are prone to hyperpigmentation, you should avoid a strong exfoliation process.
My skin is prone to pigmentation, so I typically use a gentle, chemical exfoliant but supplement once a month with a physical exfoliant. From the neck down, I also use a physical exfoliant.
2. Wear sunscreen
If you want healthy, young looking skin for years, you need to wear sunscreen. This is all the more true if you spend a lot of time in the sun.
Sunscreen slows the aging of skin and helps to prevent skin cancer.
Choose a product that offers broad spectrum protection with a minimum SPF of 30. I don’t use anything less than SPF 50.
Keep in mind that you don’t see sun damage right away. Visible freckles and sun spots are the result of past sun damage.
It’s much easier to use sunscreen preventatively than to attempt to reverse skin damage.
If you prefer tanned skin, avoid sun exposure and learn to properly fake tan.
3. Don’t spray perfume on your neck
Women often show early signs of aging at the neck/chest. Dry skin tends to wrinkle faster than oily or properly hydrated skin.
The alcohol in perfume is drying, making skin prone to wrinkles. It can also dissolve any sunscreen on your neck/chest, leaving the area exposed to the sun.
Use oils to add moisture to your skin. You can even mix them with your body lotion to help it absorb better.
In general, you should be taking all of your skincare routine down to your neck, shoulders and chest.
4. Sleep on your back
Sleeping on your back is a huge anti-aging hack that nobody talks about!
If you’re sleeping on your side 6-8 hours a day and you have a pillow smashing your face, this will eventually create fine lines.
If you are a side-sleeper, this anti-aging secret may take some time to get used to. But the skin benefits will be worth it.
Plus, sleeping on your back is healthier for your spine. You might consider buying a special pillow that will help you to comfortably sleep on your back.
Make sure to also put a small pillow under your knees to support your lower back.

I'm fortunate to have an adjustable bed so I can sleep on my back. It took me about 2 months to train myself to sleep on my back. Also, using a satin/silk pillowcase helps with the creases you get from other pillowcase materials. I can't reinterate enough on what the o.p.said. Use sunscreen! If you don't use sunscreen, your other skincare is pointless! I may have to rotate every other night to my left side..I have acid reflux, g.e.r.d, and a hiatal hernia. I take 2 antacids, but have tums on my headboard. Thanks for the tip about the left side as well.
Barbara Brown I have. My bmi is too high. It is .5 too much. Been getting bandaids in the way of acid relievers and tums for 20 years! It's ridiculous! That .5 is about 6 pounds. I've lost 24 pounds..patting myself on the back, but thank you for your advise. Not many ppl. go out of their way to reply to someone.
