Shoulder Warmers for Fall

When you think of fall, imagery of cozy sweaters always comes to mind. But in most parts of the U.S., fall is still too warm to pull out a heavy wool sweater. The leaves may change outside due to an overnight cold snap, but most days still rise into the 60s and 70s. I’ve found that a light cardigan, jacket, or wrap over a t-shirt usually suits me just fine, unless I’m somewhere outside at night. I’ve also discovered shoulder warmers. These are just a little something to put over your shoulders, not quite a collar but not quite a sleeved shrug. Just something that keeps your shoulders and upper torso warm.

I was amazed at how well just covering my shoulders worked. It keeps heat from escaping your core area. Think about how you feel snug when you put a jacket or blanket over your shoulders.

I found my shoulder warmers at little local boutiques. There are a few online, but if you’re crafty and know how to knit or crochet, you could probably make your own.

Here’s some ideas for different styles of shoulder warmers.

Knitted Sweater Shoulder Warmer

This cozy knitted collar is surprisingly warm. Once I wore it with a layered long-sleeve t-shirt over a short-sleeve t-shirt, and I had to take off the long-sleeve tee because I got so hot! It worked well over a t-shirt too. This style is similar to some made popular on the show “Outlander” where the main character wears a lot of knitted collars, shawls and wraps. You can wear this over a button-down shirt or a dress. Shop knitted shoulder warmer.

Fair Isle Collar

I found this shoulder warmer at a place that specializes in Icelandic fair isle sweaters. It’s just the fair isle collar area without the sweater. I love to toss this over a long-sleeve t-shirt for some extra warmth. I’m a big fan of the Fair Isle pattern, but the sweaters are too warm for me in September and October, where I live. I couldn’t quite find an exact dupe for this online, but I found something close. Shop Fair Isle collar.

Pashmina Wrap

You can also convert a pashmina into a shoulder warmer by folding it in half lengthwise so it’s just wide enough to cover your shoulders. Wrap it and use a brooch or scarf ring to hold it in place. I had this fall leaf hair bun holder that worked great as a scarf pin. You could also pull an infinity scarf over your shoulders the same way. This is a great way to add a little extra warmth and flair to an outfit. Try a solid color over a patterned top, or a printed or color-block pashmina over a solid top, as I have here. Shop a pashmina wrap.

Now that you have some ideas for shoulder warmers, will you wear one?
