Upcycle A Single-Use Mask Into A Reusable One
*Editor's note: Find the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's mask guidelines here. Stay safe!
We all have to wear masks these days. And we all have a single-use one lying around the house from God knows where.
But we know that reusable cloth masks are much better for the environment... So let's take apart that pesky single use mask and use its parts for a cloth one!
Cut the straps and pull out the bendy nose piece of your single-use mask.
These are the parts you want to keep!
Cut out four pieces of the same pattern.
I just eyeballed the shape, so don't be too worried about getting the lines exactly right!
Just make sure that two pieces are cut on the right side of the fabric and two on the wrong side (we need to be able to tell which part our mouth goes into each time)
Take two pieces and place them right sides together...
And with the other two pieces, place them wrong-sides together.
Straight stitch down the large rounded edge.
Place one inside the other with the clean edges facing each other
Open it up, still with the clean edges facing each other, and sew along the top
Just like this!
Flip the mask right-side-out and do a second stitch along the top. This time, stitch a centimeter below the edge, creating a tunnel for our bendy nose piece.
Slide the baby piece into the middle
Add a small stitch on either side of the bendy nose piece to keep it in place
Flip the mask inside-out and put the ear straps between the two layers in this direction
This is how it will look...
Stitch down both side and along the bottom, but leave a small hole unstitched so that you can turn the mask right-side-out one last time.
Fold the edges of the hole inward and top stitch.
And you're all done!
Enjoy your comfortable and washable face mask...
Love,
Ms. Melior

How do I make a mask for people that wear glasses? The regular ones just fog up my glasses.
A mask should be changed every hour to prevent contamination. When people wear the same mask all the time it harbors bacteria. They don’t work anyway according to 3 randomized controlled studies. But, if you insist on wearing one please change it often.
