Slugging is a skincare trick that’s taken over social media in the past, and for a good reason. It involves applying a thick, occlusive layer—usually petroleum jelly ( Vaseline)—as the last step in your bedtime routine.

This forms a barrier on your skin, locking in all the moisture from your serums and moisturizers so you wake up with soft, hydrated skin.

It originally gained popularity in K-beauty circles but has now become a go-to for anyone struggling with dryness or dullness.

1. How does slugging work?

The magic of slugging is all about moisture retention. It doesn’t add hydration on its own, but by sealing in the products you’ve already applied, it helps your skin soak up all the benefits provided by those products as you sleep.

If you’ve ever woken up with skin that feels tight or flaky, slugging could be a game-changer for you. Petroleum jelly creates a barrier that prevents water loss, keeping your skin hydrated and plump.

2. Who should try slugging?

If your skin is dry, sensitive, or even just needs some extra TLC, slugging can be a lifesaver. It’s especially helpful in colder months when the air is dry and harsh. Those with aging skin might also love this skincare trick since hydration is key to keeping fine lines at bay.

On the flip side, if you have oily or acne-prone skin, you might want to be cautious! While slugging isn’t inherently bad for breakouts, it can trap oil and bacteria if your skin isn’t properly cleansed beforehand.

3. Do skin slugging the right way

Start with a clean face then apply your usual hydrating products, like serums or moisturizers containing hyaluronic acid or glycerin.

Once your skin is prepped, smooth on a thin layer of petroleum jelly (a little goes a long way). Let it do its thing overnight, and when you wake up, your skin should feel extra soft and nourished.

Be sure to give your skin a thorough cleanse in the morning!

4. Common slugging mistakes to avoid

One of the biggest mistakes people make is slathering on way too much product. A thin layer is all you need.

Another common issue is skipping the moisturizing step—remember, slugging seals in moisture, but it doesn’t provide it on its own.

And please, please make sure your skin is properly cleansed before slugging to avoid trapping in any dirt and bacteria!

5. Alternatives to petroleum jelly

If Vaseline feels too heavy for you, don’t worry—there are other options. Squalane oil is a great lightweight alternative that still locks in moisture. Shea butter also works well and beeswax-based balms are great for creating a protective layer.

I use Vaseline after a moisturize every night, my skin has been very soft in the morning. I always get compliments about my skin. I’m 74 years old people can’t believe it.I have my silk pillowcase and wash it every few days, doesn’t stain it.
